Beautiful plants that flower in July

Late summer to early autumn is the perfect time to plant new plants in your garden. So now’s the time to get inspired!

That’s why I make monthly video updates from my home garden highlighting some of my favourite plants from that month.

Check out this month’s video where I show some of my favourite plants that flower in July.

Watch the video and read on for more details:

My favourite - The hemp-leaved marshmallow

Please don’t tell the other plants I have favourites 😉

This is the first year that I’ve grown Althea cannabina. I heard Dan Pearson talking about it and bought one the same day! It really is a beauty, but its subtle features may be lost on many gardeners. So I hope you like it as much as I do.

It’s fine leaves are few and far between, and its stem structure is incredibly open. Because of this, its pink flowers appear to float in mid-air. Very cool.

Have you got any top choices for plants that flower in July?

I love reading your comments and am particularly interested to know:

  1. Have you got any favourite plants from this video? Any you hadn’t heard of before?
  2. Have you got any favourite plants that flower in July that I didn’t mention (I’m always on the lookout for new plants and would really appreciate your recommendations)?

Thanks in anticipation.

    Hey Joe,
Great video again. Thanks. Most of the plants in the video were new to me.
You asked viewers to share other currently flowering favourites so here goes.
I think I must have some ‘bee blood’ in me because I always especially love yellow flowers –
I have just looked around my garden and found some favourites of mine, most of which are very common but nonetheless much loved by myself and insects alike.
    Here is a small list.:
Very tall Rudbekia (much admired in my front garden by people of all ages)
Rudbekia Henry Eiler- new to me this year
    Heliopsis
    Coreopsis
    Californian poppies,
    Marigolds
Sunflowers – tall ones as well as patio container plants (sorry multi headed, not everyone’s choice)
    Wild rocket
    Xerochrysum bracteatum
All above are yellow, but I also have some love.y delicate orange epilobium flowers.
I look forward to your August newsletter.

      Hi Josephine,

Thanks for sharing some of your current favourites. I also love yellow flowers!

Rudbeckia are great. We have the smaller cultivar R. subtomentosa ‘Little Henry’. I saw quite a lot of the bigger flowered Rudbeckia at Wisley recently and really loved them.

Need to give some Heliopsis a go next year.

I’m really please your Epilobium is starting to flower. Our E. canum ‘Ed Carman’ have just started flowering. Later than the other cultivar we have, E. canum ‘Dublin’

Thanks so much for letting me know your favourites. Definitely some inspiration in there for me. I’m really glad the video inspired you too.

      Best wishes,
      Joe
