Planting wildflowers in your meadow is easy
I was planting wildflowers in our meadow the other day and decided to make a quick video about it. Because jobs like this are often “overthought”, and they don’t need to be.
In this video, I show you how simple jobs like this can be. Enjoy!
Watch the video and read on for more details:
Where did the wildflower seedlings come from?
It’s common to buy wildflower seedlings in plug trays from companies like Meadowmania, and this works well. In fact, I did this last spring.
This can be a great option, but it’s not the cheapest option. Personally, I like to sow my own wildflower seeds. I saved these Primula veris (Cowslip) seeds from a client’s garden, so it was completely free.
As a price comparison, you’ll pay over £1.00 per plant if you buy from places like Meadowmania.
Technique for planting wildflowers
As you’ll see in the video, planting wildflowers that you’ve sown yourself couldn’t be easier. Here are the key points you need to know:
- It’s best to transplant wildflowers when they’re young, but big enough to handle without causing too much damage.
- You should plant them at a time of year when they’re not experiencing very much stress. Autumn through to early spring usually works quite well.
- All you need is a trowel.
- Tease the roots apart.
- Make a slit in the soil.
- Plant the seedlings.
- Water
Let me know how you get on
It’d be great to hear if you’ve been planting wildflowers in your own meadow this winter. So please do leave a comment 😊
Happy planting.

Thank you Joe. I planted some from Meadowmania in autumn. Campion, bedstraw, and reseda.
Dominic.
Great choices Dom. I planted some White Campion (from Meadowmnia) last year and am hoping they will help to attract more moths to the garden. I also sowed seeds of other campion in autumn.
Please do keep me updated with how your plugs are establishing.
All the best,
Joe
