Autumn in the naturalistic garden (plant ideas)
Our naturalistic garden has been looking fantastic since mid-spring, but autumn is the time when it really begins to shine. In part, that’s because this is the time of year when most other gardens are starting to look a bit… tired.
Let me take you on a “video tour” of our garden so I can show you some of my favourite plants that will continue to amaze right through winter.
Watch the video and read on for more details:
Embracing autumn and winter in the naturalistic garden
What I love most about naturalistic gardens is the way they evolve as the light shifts and the days shorten.
Seed heads catch the low sun, stems sway in the breeze, and grasses ripple like waves, even when flowers have faded. There’s a quiet drama in these late-season scenes, a rhythm that feels alive and connected to the cycles of nature.
In a naturalistic garden, every element has purpose. The contrast between upright and flowing forms, dense and airy textures, and the subtle interplay of muted tones keeps the eye moving. Even when colors are soft, the layers of shape and structure give richness and depth to the scene.
Perhaps of most importance is the role of the naturalistic garden in supporting wildlife throughout the year. In summer, flowers provide nectar and pollen. But when summer fades, seedheads provide food for birds, while the structure of stems and grasses offers shelter through harsh weather.
A naturalistic garden that evolves gracefully, that doesn’t rely solely on flowers to be beautiful, feels honest and alive. It reminds me that gardening isn’t just about the peak of summer, but about appreciating the full story of each season.
How is your garden at this time of the year?
I’d be really interested to hear how your garden is doing at the moment. And if you’ve found inspiration in any of the plants in this video.
Storm Benjamin is set to hit England tomorrow. Hopefully our gardens will “breeze” through it.
Happy gardening.

Loved this Joe, really lovely look to your autumn garden. So pleased we met and to be following you and hoping we can embark on something akin to these ideas at my place..
Thanks so much Martin 🙏
Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been learning how to make videos, so am looking forward to making a load more with a more professional feel to them.
I’m really excited to get designing for your plot. Such an exciting project. Looking forward to seeing you this Friday 🎃
